We are tackling all three types of measurement this week. Today, we focused on length. I know it sounds trivial, but every year I find about a third of my students using the wrong side of the ruler and rounding to the nearest centimeter. I want students to focus on accuracy (using the correct increments) and precision (not rounding, and looking at millimeters). Tomorrow, students will be measuring their own body parts in "Mini Metric Me." If students finish early, I'll challenge them to measure objects around the room.
All that math homework from weeks 2-4 are going to pay off as we move onto metric conversions on Thursday. We'll use the ladder method, and a graphic organizer to move that decimal point around.
The measurement test is going to be split into two parts (multiple choice and lab practical). The lab practical will be Thursday, October 4th. The multiple choice part with metric conversions will be on Wednesday, October 3rd. That's next week!!! You should be observing the work load increasing as each subject is giving their own tests. We average 1 test in science every 2-3 weeks.
